Practice Tip - Reading Music

What is the best way to become a good music reader? Read new music every day.

Finding music a little easier than the student’s current level and playing a new piece (or section) each day is a great way to develop better music reading skills. There are books created just for sightreading, (reading and playing just by sight, not practicing in advance,) or you can just get any music. (Yard sales, thrift stores, and the library are great resources.) It just has to be music that will not be “learned,” meaning not practiced. Then the goal is to play as slow as needed, but with correct notes and rhythm the first time it is played. Two or three times is the max the piece should be played. After that it is practicing. The next day, play something else. Because this music must never be practiced, it can also be a fun part of your child’s daily practice routine.
