Parents Ask Pam
Have a question for Miss Pam? You can email, text message, or message on Facebook your questions. She will respond immediately to you, and your question might be featured in future newsletters.
Q: Our daughter is very interested in music and loves to play on her keyboard at home. She is not quite 3.5 years old, though. Would you consider letting her join your class anyway?
A: It’s so special that your daughter already loves exploring her keyboard and creating sounds of her own. Around age 3.5 is when most children begin to thrive in Crescendo Kids classes. That’s typically the age when they’re able to listen to gentle instruction, work on short activities independently, and interact comfortably with other children.
Every child grows at their own pace, though, and sometimes readiness shows up a little earlier or a little later. A free trial lesson is the best way to see how your child responds and whether she feels comfortable and confident in class. (Unfortunately, free trials are not available at community center classes.)
If it feels just a bit too soon, there’s no rush. So much development happens between ages 3 and 3.5, and a few months can make a big difference in attention and independence.
In the meantime, listening to music together is one of the most meaningful ways to support her interest right now. Classical music offers a wide variety of instruments and gives young ears a rich foundation for musical understanding. Along with classical, music from all genres and cultures can be beneficial. Listening is an activity that benefits all ages and is one of the most powerful ways to nurture a lifelong love of music.
