Online Private Piano

Online private piano lessons for children and adults.

Online private piano lessons for children and adults.

Ready for traditional one-on-one private piano lessons? Each piano lesson is tailored to your or your child's specific needs. Our private piano instructors are skilled musicians with expertise in classical studies, jazz, composition, ear-training and music theory to name just a few. However, what makes our teachers unique is their ability to interact with young children. They know the importance of making lessons fun to increase motivation and will incorporate games and activities to encourage your child's learning process. Our interactive piano practice app also helps motivate students to play longer and with more focus.

The most important aspect in finding a private instructor, besides their musical expertise, is the rapport that happens between the teacher, student and parents. Our teachers are passionate and enthusiastic about sharing their love of music with others. Whether you are a child or an adult, our qualified teachers will tailor your individual lessons to fit your unique learning style and musical goals.

 Our Private Piano Instructors

All of our piano instructors are highly qualified with University degrees, previous experience working with children, character recommendations, and passing criminal history checks. Once they start working with Move Over Mozart, we also include ongoing teacher education to keep them updated with current teaching techniques and motivational tips. Each private piano instructor will use their own favorite lesson books and teaching methods to individualize and cater the lesson to your own (or your child’s) personal learning style. Our private piano program is ideal for older children through adult ages, beginning through advanced levels. For our younger beginning students, we highly recommend they start their piano learning journey with our Crescendo Kids Online or Crescendo Kids Classes first.

Kevin Kenney aka “Mr. Kevin

Piano Teacher for Private Lessons and Crescendo Kids

I have been around music my whole life.  My mother was a piano teacher, so I grew up with the sound of lessons going on in the background all the time.  I took music lessons for various instruments but I always kept coming back to the piano.  I earned a BFA from State University of New York at Purchase and have been a life long music student.  In 2004 I started teaching private piano lessons and have found it incredibly rewarding.  I play the piano frequently and find it an extremely expressive instrument.  I look forward to sharing this love of the piano with many students at Move Over Mozart!

Mr. Kevin has been a piano teacher with Move Over Mozart since 2011, teaching nearly 700 different students.  He is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays and the weekends.

 Questions and Answers

What is the best age to start private piano lessons?

Traditionally, music professionals have suggested that the best age to start piano lessons would be at age 9. This is the reason many schools start musical instrument lessons in fourth and fifth grades. The thing is, many children are ready to make music at a much earlier age, even though the traditional concept of private lessons is not conducive to their learning. Move Over Mozart’s Crescendo Kids, Classes and Online, was created to help fill in this gap. We realize our lessons are catered to the "beginning" musician and hope at some point your child will transition to private lessons. But when is the ideal time to make this move? The following are some questions to help you make this decision about your individual child.

  1. Do you have a piano or its equivalent at home? While a small keyboard is great for getting started with lessons, there are many playing techniques that are just not possible on most keyboards. Additionally, you will need a keyboard with all 88 keys. Not only does this help with orientation, but many pieces require the lower and upper octaves.

  2. Is your child practicing daily? Private lessons require an intensity that many young children are just not ready for. Private teachers expect 30 minutes of practice, 5 days a week. For most young children, this is too much.

  3. Is your child reading notes on the staff? Although private teachers will teach this, Move Over Mozart’s Crescendo Kids is able to play many theory games to reinforce some of these basic concepts. This will give your child a strong foundation of how to read music and how notes move on the staff before switching to private lessons.

  4. Is your child at least 8 years old and in 3rd grade? Although there are some private instructors that will take students at a younger age, this is the ideal age to start private lessons because the student has matured to a level where private lessons can be enjoyable. This is actually a little younger than traditionally recommended, however, Move Over Mozart students have more training and experience than the typical beginning student.

  5. Has your child progressed faster and farther than the material and curriculum provided in Crescendo Kids? Our piano program has many levels for achievement. Occasionally there will be a child that we believe would learn better in the private setting, but our Crescendo Kids program is very favorable to learning music, especially for young children.

May we have private lessons if we only have a keyboard at home?

Keyboards are fabulous for learning the basics of playing the piano! They are inexpensive, more mobile, and require less maintenance to continue a quality sound. The different “bells and whistles” on a keyboard can also be useful to encourage more practicing and when used in conjunction with music composition. For the beginning student, a keyboard and piano is virtually interchangeable. However, at some point your budding musician will need the nuance and technique that can only be learned on an acoustic piano. If your child only has a keyboard, even if it is digital, please start planning to purchase an acoustic piano in the near future.

What practice tips do you suggest?

Our whole ‘brand” is to keep your child motivated through fun activities. However, when something HAS to be done, every day, it can be challenging. Here are some tips to keep daily practice interesting. Changing it up is so useful!

  • Practice several times a day for shorter periods of time.

  • Play each song or section of music at least 3 times in a row.

  • Practice slow enough to play it perfect.

  • Break harder or longer pieces into smaller sections.

  • Set a goal for each practice session.

  • Have practice time be a “special one-on-one time” with a parent.

  • Do not use practice time as a punishment.

  • Listen to live music whenever possible.

  • Listen to recordings of music being learned, or music that could be learned in the future. Listen to jazz or classical piano.
