Practice Tip - Get Involved!

When a child starts piano lessons, they may know that they need to “practice” but they do not know what that actually means or how to do it. With your guidance, practice can be easy, productive and successful. Here are some simple steps to gain big advantages.

Miss Pam with her daughter, Paula

  1. Stay nearby. Your child wants your attention. They want to know that you are listening. And they want you available if there is a question.

  2. Offer choices of what to play. “Do you want to first play a piece you’ve already learned, play a scale, or start with your new piece?”

  3. Play a musical game. Theory can be fun to learn when it is learned with a partner.

  4. Keep the practice time short. 2 - 5 minutes is plenty time to focus. It is best to break a long practice session into several short sections. Or, mix up the practice routine. Play one piece for only 2 minutes, then move onto a different piece.

  5. Celebrate effort, not just accomplishments.

Keeping your child engaged and helping them find a routine that works for them may be a more work in the beginning but as your child gets older, they will have the foundation needed to have a productive practice time on their own.

If you ever have questions about how to support practice, you are always welcome to reach out to your teacher in Practice Space or contact Miss Pam through email. Your involvement is the key that helps practice turn into progress.
