Feature Article - Meet Miss Elaina Malcolm

By Pamela Cornell, Director

This year, several wonderful teachers have joined Move Over Mozart, including someone with a meaningful history at our school. Miss Elaina, one of the online teachers, was among the very first teachers to work with Move Over Mozart in its early years. At that time, she was earning her Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Seattle Pacific University. Since then, she has also earned a Master’s of Education from Lesley University and is certified as a Life Coach. After more than 25 years, it is a joy to welcome her back to the team.

To help families get to know her better, Miss Elaina shared a little about her musical journey and what inspires her as a teacher.

How old were you when you started playing the piano?
I was 7 years old when I started learning how to play the piano.

Why did you start piano lessons?
We had a piano at home, and my parents noticed that I was really interested in learning how to play, so they encouraged me to take lessons.

Are there other musicians in your family?
Yes! My dad and all of his siblings took piano lessons when they were young, and my dad loved to sing. He was in the church choir for many years and sometimes performed in children’s musicals. My mom was also in the choir and later took piano lessons while my sisters and I were in school. All of us had some kind of private music instruction or music classes in school. I took piano lessons, played flute in band, and eventually focused on choir in high school.

As a child, what kept you motivated to practice?
I was very determined to keep learning. I loved discovering what I could do as I developed my skills and exploring what was possible at the piano.

What made you decide to study music in college?
I didn’t study piano specifically at the university level, but I took piano classes as part of my Music Education degree and needed to pass a piano proficiency exam. Piano has always been an important part of my musical foundation.

Do you have a favorite composer?
I love playing the pieces that Johann Sebastian Bach compiled in the Anna Magdalena Notebook for his daughter. I was introduced to them in middle school and still enjoy playing them today.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to and playing?
I listen to all kinds of music, gospel, classical, jazz, folk, rock, indie, and country. I really enjoy playing a wide variety of styles as well.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
I had amazing music teachers growing up. My choir teacher was energetic, enthusiastic, and made learning fun. My voice teacher in college was the same way. I was always challenged musically, but there was also a lot of joy and laughter. Even though I teach piano, I believe singing is good for the soul and I love playing the piano while singing.

Is there anything else you’d like families to know about you?
When I was young, my mom used to sing to me often. Her voice was sweet, gentle, and calming, and it made me feel loved. Looking back, I think those moments helped shape my desire to create music. I’m so grateful she gave me opportunities to learn instruments like piano and flute. I’m almost certain she knew I was going to become a music teacher.
