Practice Tip - Quality Versus Quantity

Is it better to practice five minutes every day or wait until there is more time to practice for an hour all at once? Consistency makes all the difference. Practicing even just five minutes each day is more effective than one long session once in a while.

This is because our brains can focus deeply only for short periods before attention starts to drift. When students play a passage three times in a row, here is what often happens. The first time, they concentrate carefully, making sure not to miss a note. The second time, confidence grows and they try to play even better. By the third time, focus begins to fade. Having succeeded twice, they relax and rely too much on confidence rather than attention.

So how do you increase your daily practice time while staying true to focus? Try practicing multiple times throughout the day. Spend two to three minutes on one short section, then take a break or switch to a different short section. Breaking practice into manageable chunks keeps concentration fresh and helps prevent burnout.

Short, focused practice sessions keep concentration strong and make every moment count. When time is tight, practicing a little bit each day truly adds up to real progress.

Remember, the key is not how long you practice but how focused and engaged you are while playing. Celebrate the small steps and progress each day because they add up to big musical growth over time.
