  • Weekly videos to be viewed at your convenience

Students are divided into piano classes based on their age and musical level. Video lessons, 3 - 5 minutes, teach music theory appropriate to their own understanding..

  • Four Online Mini-Lessons you schedule for your availability.

Your child’s piano teacher will individualize these 8-minute mini-lessons to fit your child’s personality and musical level. Our goal is at least one new song a week, but each child is encouraged to progress at their own pace. Additional mini-lessons may be purchased if desired.

  • Additional Media as Needed to Support Each Lesson

Worksheets, theory games, or other teaching curriculum may be provided to further understanding and motivation as needed. Each individual learns differently and we have multiple resources available to meet your child’s specific learning style.

  • Access to Our Practice App

Our practice app records practice time, rewards students for practicing, gives feedback about how well a student is playing a piece, keeps all assignments in one area and super easy to access, as well as giving texting access to other students of the same age and musical level and text directly to your child’s piano teacher for any assistance between lessons.

We have different musical levels for your child to progress through. Students are put into one of four classes depending on their age and musical ability.

Pre-Reading - Ages 3 - 5 years, or students not yet reading,

We use a color-coded method for the preschool child to match their five fingers to five keys on the piano. New songs using only those 5 notes are given each week. Music theory, appropriate to this age, is also taught.

Primary - Ages 5 -7 years or older and brand new to music,

This group is for the very basics of piano playing and preparing to read music on the staff. Piano students learn to play simple rhythms, correct hand position, and the names of the white keys on the piano.

Beginning Elementary - Ages 7-12 years or younger and reading notes,

This is for piano students beginning to read notes on the staff. Lessons teach how the staff relates to the piano and how to translate the notes into making music. Students will also memorize a few key notes on the staff to assist with their ability to read music.

Advanced Elementary - Ages 7 - 12 years with previous piano lessons

This group already reads notes on the staff and can immediately identify many of the notes by name. They will learn more advanced technique and music theory beyond the initial basics of learning to play.

What piano teaching methods do you use?

Our piano lessons use a variety of popular music teaching methods.

  • KODALY RHYTHM associating each rhythmic note with a syllable such as "ta" for quarter notes and "ti-ti" for eighth notes.

  • EAR-TRAINING, the ability to recognize what notes are doing from listening.

  • SOLFEGGIO, assigning syllables to each tone of the scale. (Do, re, mi, . .) Although we will use the American system of a movable tonic "do,” we typically only teach these syllables in the key of C.

  • COLOR-CODING KEYS AND FINGERS, this very effective method is used for our pre-reading students.

  • HAL LEONARD PIANO LESSONS, this book is great for our younger or non-practicing beginners. It is mostly self-explanatory, making it easy for non-musical parents to follow along. It teaches note-reading through recognizing if notes are moving up or down and with steps (2nds) or skips (3rds).

  • ROBERT PACE MUSIC FOR PIANO is used for our older students or students with previous piano experience. It presents the note-reading process by recognizing patterns. It also has the student transposing songs into different keys from the beginning.

  • LEARNING IS MOTIVATED THROUGH FUN. It is our belief that a child is motivated to learn when they are having fun and enjoy what they are doing. Many musical concepts are taught through interactive games and activities.

How much practice is expected between lessons?

When a child first begins piano lessons, regular, daily practice is important. However it is more about making it a DAILY routine than the amount of time or quality of practice. Set a piano time that works best with your child's daily schedule and will be fairly easy to keep consistent. This is your child's "piano time." They may play whatever they want for as little or long as they want. The goal is to make "piano time" a daily habit. What they play and for how long they play will come out of their own desire to make music.

What does “Piano Practice” look like for a pre-reading child?

This video shows what it looks like to help your pre-schooler play the piano.

For Children ages 3 - 5 years old, of course regular practice is always recommended, but at this early age, traditional practice would be quite challenging if not impossible. Children love making music. At first it is just experiencing the different sounds that they can make out of the piano. They will also want to pretend they are a great performer or composer and imitate a wonderful song. As they play and listen, they will discover which notes sound good and which notes don’t sound nice. They also learn how to control the notes with their fingers (as compared to the whole hand.) Playing the song they learn during their lesson once or twice a day would be enough formal practicing at this age. Enjoying the piano and creating their own music is also important because it encourages their inner motivations of learning music.

 Parent Testimonials

We have really enjoyed our experience at Move Over Mozart. We have two boys 10 & 7 and they both started when they were 6 years old. Move Over Mozart is an amazing program that isn’t too overwhelming for little kids. Pam has designed the program to be a perfect balance of learning how to read music and learning how to play songs while making it a lot of fun. Our youngest has only done Virtual Learning and he is surprisingly doing really well! We are impressed with all the teachers, but our boys have LOVED learning from Josh, he is so great with kids.

It has been a joy to see how much our daughter has improved over the past couple years. I was skeptical about the move to online classes, but I am impressed by the transition. You are all awesome! Thank you for all of the hard work you do.
